If these people didn't have Japanese media, they would likely find some other similar social phenomenon to latch onto, such as "Star Trek" or "Dungeons and Dragons."

The concept of Japan as a singular, all-encompassing social organism, in which personal identity is overridden by a national identity and everyone "fits in", is also extremely attractive to these people. They tend to be socially maladjusted, overweight, unattractive, etc. In short, they have something they are ostracized for in their native culture. What they don't realize is that a) they would never be accepted as Japanese in Japan because they are gaijin, and b) bullying in Japan has become an epidemic and their lives would likely be just as miserable, even if they were "true" Japanese.

Do note that I am talking about people who are actually *obsessed* with anime, (self-styled "otaku", a horrible insult in Japan and a testament to the fanbase's tendency for ignorant cultural misappropriation) and not those who merely have a casual interest in it.
